It's when you work on a bank holiday (sometimes public holidays aswell) to give you an extra days holiday. Or when christmas etc is at the weekend so you don't work anyway you may be given a lieu day/ have the monday off instead.

What are floating days?
for example our reporters are contrcted to a 37.5 hour week but they work late to cover deadlines and may work at night to cover a council meeting, that time is accrued and they take it when it suits them or the department. here most friday afternoons the editorial dept is empty as they've all worked late during the week, deadlines are over so they "have their time back"
Haven't a foggy. Someone else can probably give a better version of what i said, but currently my dad's fighting for extra pay or a lieu day ro something because he often has to be 'on call' as an engineer. he was on call on christmas day which was a public holiday seeing as it was at the weekend, and according to his bosses he was entilted to any extra pay etc other than it being a weekend. Luckily he didn't get called out but it meant he couldn't drink and had to be careful what he did and where he went which made the day quite awkward.
that's different though molly - i'd guess your dad is contracted to be on call a certain amount of time/days so he isn't working out of hours or extra hours.
Fluff he works 8-4 mon-fri, but once every three weeks he's on call for all of the hours outside of those I jsut mentioned although they're flexible and people will swap days if there's a special occaision etc and they make their own rota up for christmas so that each person only has to do a few days during that week or two.
We used to call them TOIL..............time off in lieu (of pay)

but is it part of his contract to be on call? when i worked as service manager we had two guys on call eveyrnight and over the weekends, they were contracted to do this but got paid call out fees and paid for the hours worked.
If you work for a really top company and they are letting you have an extra paid days holiday for the Royal Wedding on April 29th, but you would rather work that Friday, you could have a lieu day instead i.e. you could have a paid days holiday at a time to suit your work and yourself instead of having the 29th april off
The best thing is to ask at work. If you don't know what they are then they probably don't apply in your job
I'm not sure what's prompted the question. Do others at work get them? Have you asked them?
You only acrue Lieu days with your knowledge and consent though, you cannot work extra above your contracted hours with the assumption that you are being paid overtime because you have not been advised otherwise, and then your manager tells you retrospectively that you were working for lieu time. there has to be an agreement and understanding that you are working for future paid time off rather than paid overtime,
