I had to cheat and look this one up, but there's an excellent answer here:

Seems this is a name given to a certain class size of paper by the ISO (International Standards Organization), the same folks who brought you easy-to-remember monikers like 802.11G and IEEE1394. The description you're about to read is probably more answer than you wanted.
