Been offered a job but....
15 Answers
I had a job interview late July and was offered the job early Sept, she said they were waiting for HR to do their thing and she said it may take them sometime.
Loads of peope I have spoken to have said that HR always take ages but I'm slightly worried, what if they've changed their mind or something?!
I emailed my future supervisor asking for an update, she replied back in a friendly way and said she would contact me once HR contacted her.
What do I do? Should I call HR myself???

you know it takes ages so why try to force them to give a response theyre not ready to give? impatience may just irritate...
there is a hierarchy and your first port of call is this woman and that should be enough...
it is only mid september now...and you know it always takes ages

I'll prob email her next week, I really wanted to go on holiday before I started too but I bet if I book something they'll fix the start date to the day I want to go!!

you could use that as an excuse...say you have been offered a chance to go on a holiday, and wanted to know if its likely to clash with your start dates...dont give the date of the holiday in the first email though...maybe they will respond with a guesstimate time frame.
if you do ask though, do it only once... dont keep asking

It usually takes a few weeks from being offered the job, for HR to do their stuff - if your job offer was "subject to satisfactory references" then they have to send out reference requests and wait for your referees to post them back - it's only been a couple of weeks. By all means ask HR for an update - there is no harm in asking about progress of your paperwork, and you can tell them that you are going on leave and wondered if you would receive official confirmation before you go.
I had a check done recently for my job and with that and HR processes it took ages to get everything through - about 2 months although I was already there on agency thankfully so at least I was working through it until I was ok'd to be employed direct. Others who have come straight in had to wait that time until cleared before starting though.
I had to provide loads of information for my check on set forms and providing past addresses for 6 years, employers etc... criminal/credit history confirmations, references, certified photos, all sorts and was well aware I was having the check done and am fairly certain I had to sign the form to consent to it.
Have they not even given a rough timescale? Have you got a formal job offer in writing?

I am just renewing my CRB certificate(it is renewed every three years) and if they are doing one you have a declaration to sign and proof of identity including at least one document which shows your date of birth and at least 2 other items confirming your place of residence. There are two lists from which to chooses and the number of documents required depends on which list you use.
