is there any fairness in this or do management & HR support the former decision. Is there any fairness in a grievance procedure.

It depends on the integrity of the HR department and the company. In my experience HR staff are generally very fair but may very occasionally be influenced by direct/indirect pressure from above.
There should be. There should be a policy and procedure that is adhered to and the process should be documented and transparent.
Odd things like this happen to us all the time.
Over the course of a week several unusual things may happen to us.
When I stopped at the traffic lights today I stopped behind someone with the same car make, model and colour as mine. With all the colours and models available what were the chances of that. But I stop at lights so often it's bound to happen from time to time. If that hadn't happened some other unlikely event may have happened- eg I drove past a pastie shop just as pasties were discussed on the radio.

Well there is pressure from the one's above, which makes its so unfair. I have to sit there and basically be raped of my dignity and the decision will be made before I begin.
Err- ignore my last post- I was replying to another thread so don't know how it ended up here!
No, that shouldn't be the case, if you appeal it should be fair and impartial. Do you have a representative?

yes my union rep will be with me but they have'nt taken much notice of her so far
You can try getting advice from ACAS
I assume your grievance relates to this earlier thread in which you thought you should be allowed to move from part time to full time in your current role.

yes it is
Good luck then. I think their decision was probably valid in the circumstances but let's hope they decide to compromise/back down
