my husband's workmate was telling him that their little girl is starting school soon. Apparently the teacher is coming out to their home to see what sort of home he comes from - does this sound right? Does that happen with every child?
Perfectly normal. My friend has just got a job as a teaching assistant and she is accompanying the reception teacher on home visits to meet all of the new children. The things reception teacher said she would come here to meet them before they started school if they didn't go to nursery.

Sounds like good pastoral care to me, establishing links with parents.
Possibly also because of the increasing number of 5 year olds who are lacking in primary socialisation.
My daughters school has home visits for all new pupils
It gives the teachers a feel of the child's home life
They are not there to judge you and it is something many 100's of schools do now
Gosh, I've never ever heard of this before. My daughter didn't get a visit before she started school.
It's not something I've heard of in South Wales or the Bristol area.
Yep; pretty standard practice bednobs. I haven't done home visits myself because they take a LOT of organising and the school hasn't done them in previous years so I wasn't going to volunteer to start! We had lots of chances for parents to visit with children instead and I went to visit the two main feeder playgroups.
