"an adult in the UK should be able to divide 24 by 8 and multiply the result by three and five. Apparently to some AB-ers this is an outrageous suggestion."

In the same way that it's outrageous to condemn those who need help? Maybe NJ should stand for Nonsensically Judgemental?
Ludwig.....I did pick NJ up on his attitude towards the op. He was unkind and pompous....as is his attempt to take the blame.
I hated doing arithmetic at school. I was afraid of the whole lesson I never enjoyed it. It wasn't called Maths in those days. We were taught the basics and there were no calculators then. It never really held me back I have had jobs where I needed to balance long columns of money or work out percentages, but I'm not happy being confronted with problems like mk1975. Looking at the answers on here the method is straightforward it is a matter of being taught to enjoy your subject. To me, jno's method made it look easy.
Lets ease up on NJ, please, what one puts on here may come across as harsh but probably isn't meant
Factor-fiction, so agree with your comment regarding parental attitude to Mathematics, it's OK, almost a badge of honour, to say I was bad at Maths, but the same parents have a dozen fits if their child is not on the highest reading level.

Psyb....he brought it up again....badly. And you know how I hate seeing people put down....unless of course they are rude and ask for it......☺
I bet mk wishes he hadn't asked now - I bet you've all scared him off.
Naomi, in my opinion that's unfair
Naomi- I wonder whether you have misread jim's posts or perhaps confused him with another poster on this thread
Good grief, mk!

By the way, sorry to be critical but this is not maths, it is simple arithmetic.

it is rather like saying that the end of term play at the local primary school is theatrical drama.

If I were to ask a question about the eight times table I would head it "arithmetic".

I was foolish enough to suggest that an adult in the UK should be able to divide 24 by 8 and multiply the result by three and five. Apparently to some AB-ers this is an outrageous suggestion.

All of them psybbs?
Not to all of them, zacs. If the parent didn't get the hang of it at school, they're not going to be able to help the child. Someone's probably said that already, but I think it's understandable. Sad, but understandable.
Boxy....Mk was very polite and level.....a cut above some....I hope she does come back if help is needed with her son's homework....and gets polite answers.....surely that is part of what this site is all about.

If we all know everything and don't need to ask....Ed will have nothing to eat but his cake.....☺
Zacs was simply repeating NJ's comments , boxtops.
Maybe this thread has run its course and Ed may feel it's time to close off the option of adding further replies as he did with the Estoppel threads
Well exactly, gness - mk said they didn't get sums, and good for them for admitting it. That's what this site is all about!

Sorry, that wasn't to SD - but to factor-fiction.
But that's exactly what teachers have to do, Naomi- decide which level to pitch at - and adjust if needed. And it's true in all communications. But I agree that it would be insulting to say to someone "I will keep this simple for you because I know you are not the brightest", although that isn't how I interpreted the comment
In the interests of harmony and the OP's inbox (if they haven't unsubscribed) might it be an idea to leave this now. :-)
Factor-fiction, That's exactly how I interpreted his comment - and it isn't the first time his posts have conveyed a similar message. He's talking to adults - mostly intelligent adults - and he isn't here to teach.
