When I was in employment (now retired) I always turned the washing machine on when I left for work. After retirement I turned it on when going out shopping etc.
A couple of months ago the machine made a loud bang, on investigating the noise the kitchen was full of black smoke yet the machine was still working.
I dread to think what could have happened had I not been there. So ABers think about what you allow to run while you are out.

She was wakened by smoke and ran down to the kitchen. The dishwasher was on fire and sadly her two dogs, who slept in the kitchen, died in the fire.
I have always switched off dishwashers and washing machines when I go out or go to bed.

I leave numerous computers running, routers, alarm clocks, dishwasher washing machine, TVs, digi boxes, compressors, freezers, fridges, dehumidifiers and god knows how many chargers plugged in.
If I was to go around switching everything off and then off again it would take me an age to leave the house:-(

I used to put the washing machine on overnight on economy7. I woke up one morning, got out of bed and my feet hit 2" of water. I lived in a bungalow at the time. The whole of the house was flooded. After I set the machine in motion and went to bed, Severn Trent decided to turn the water off for repairs to the system. The ingoing water only had chance to wet the soap powder not wash it through. This mass set solid like concrete. When the water came back on later on, the water couldn't get into the machine, it just poured out onto the floor. This must have been going on for hours. It took about three months for everything to dry out. It was awful.
I have had another two floodings due to washing machine since then at the house where I am now. They were twice as bad as the first.
