Faithfully or Sincerely...Which ??

Having recently been told that I am to be made Redundant, I am lauching myself into the job market, but have got myself into a knot, when ending my letter's

Under what circumstances do you use faithfully or Sincerely??

As a rule of thumb, if you are writing to a person you know the name of eg Mr Brown then you would use Yours Sincerely at the end of the letter. If you are writing to a Dear Sir or Madam type of letter then use Yours Faithfully

And wherever possible try and find out who you should be writing to!  It always shows you in a good light if you have taken the time to research the company and therefore able to address your letter personally.

Sincerely Sir AND Faithfully Friend are both WRONG.
