I want to start a career in Scaffolding but don't know where to begin. I currently have no experience in Scaffolding and no cards that will permit to become a Scaffolder
Just want some advice on where to start and what courses I need to take and cards I need to get my first job in Scaffolding.
There's plenty of scaffolding going on at the moment. It's always worth simply approaching any riggers you see in your area, and asking to be taken on as a trainee. You may start by just humping tube around, but you'll get there.
You can probably join as an Apprentice too, if the company is taking on the Government apprenticeship scheme - that way you study for an NVQ-type qualification while you're training.
My advice would be to approach a reputable scaffold company in your area and apply for a job as a labourer. You will need to pass a CSCS heath and safety test before you can start. This is multiple choice test which is done at an appointed centre which are all over the country. Once you pass the test you can apply for a card which will get you onto most UK sites. You may have to complete a 1 day COPS training course which is a introduction to scaffolding to get onto some high profile jobs but most sites just want a general operatives green card.
Most scaffold companies are very busy at the moment so you should have no problem getting a start once you get the card.
Once you have completed six months as a labourer you can start on the series of training courses if you show an aptitude for the trade. They are very expensive with weeks of time away from site so you may need a good sponsor to help you along.
