After doing my course in April, and quite a lot of letters to companies / publishers etc, today I was offered my first proper paid proofreading job (after doing a test piece weeks ago). £30 p.h which is more than I expected so pretty pleased right now . A real boost after a stressful couple of weeks.

Very good!!
Snowball, I've been thinking of proofreading for a while now. Congratulations on passing your course. What course did you take, details(costs) please. £30 p.h sounds very inviting.
Congratulations, Smow! I hope it leads to more work for you. Well done.

Ahh thankyou all! Hourly rates vary hugely between companies but as I'm doing it freelance it seems to be better paid. It's quite hard to get into but once you get a foot in the door somewhere you're usually off! I did my course with Chapterhouse , in London. They're renowned for being one of the best in the world, and as I live in London it was perfect. They offer several courses, including correspondence ones if you can't get to London. I did the copy- editing one too.
Can you proofread my posts before they become visible ? I do it myself for the majority, umpteen times over usually, and correct the errors in 75% (on average) of the words typed (correctly !), but there is always one that seems to slip throogh all the checks.
well done smow xx hope things are better on the other front
Is the £30 p.h. an actual rate or an estimate of what you should earn ? With you working from home an employer would have no way to know the number of hours worked.
Well done OG - was that a test for Smow?

Donny this job is proofreading manuscripts online with proofreading software which has a time tracker built in so they know exactly how long it's taken me . And yes it's an exact £30 per hour.
I'd love that job, Smow. I've seen adverts in newspapers for courses but always thought they were a bit of a scam.

Obviously not. That's great.

It isn't easy to get work - I was beginnng to get a bit frustrated but bizarrely I've also heard this morning that I've been accepted to proofread for an American I.T publisher too. That's much much harder as it's all computer language !
