I have been at the same company now for almost 10 years. I am 29 and moved in to another department about 2 years ago. I am bored, I try to get more involved in my work but it doesn`t interest me. I end up wondering around speaking rubbish to people all day. Plus my salary is rubbish and I have bought a flat which i can pay for but leaves me little for the rest of the month. PLEASE WHAT CAN I DO. STUCK IN A RUT comes to mind.

There is a model that can help you. There are two basic types of people. Task driven and task avoiding. The task driven person thinks. i hate this job I need a new one. The task avoiding person thinks I hate this job but other jobs might be worse so Ill stay. I suspect your the last type. Call some agencies and let them find you options and give yourself a rule. Ignore the first offer but go for an interview for at least one in the next five. Finally tell your boss you are looking for another job. It not the British way of doing things but it works. It will either confirm they dont care or that they should offer you something better. You have nothing to loose. I wont wish you "good luck" because luck is when preparation meets oportunity and you have to make both.

Are there no career development policies in your own organisation? It might be worth explaining your dilemma to your HR Department ( if the organisation is large enough to have one). They may be able to run some psychological tests to see which kind of roles you are best suited to. Do you have any hobbies or special interests which could be incorporated into making a living for yourself? As regards shortage of cash, do you have a spare bedroom you could let out? Your new lodger could provide some extra cash and possibly an insight into a different career. Meanwhile, to relieve your boredom, how about popping into your local library and getting an evening class prospectus? There are so many activities on offer - possibly learning a new skill would trigger some career ideas?
