has given me a 'Lohnsteurkarte 2006', any ideas what I have to do with it.....?

Lohnsteuerkarten are Tax Cards to facilitate the payment of Wage Tax.

Thanks Kempie, so does she need to pay tax here (she is from Germany), does the tax card need to be sent to the tax office with my details confirming that she is living / working here etc...?
As far as I am aware (and I am by no means an expert) Germans who work abroad may have a tax liability back in Germany as well as being required to pay the local tax of the host country in which they work.

As I see it, your au pair requires a personal tax allowance, and associated tax code, from your local Tax Office to enable you to deduct PAYE (to conform to UK tax rules) plus you need to record on the Lohnsteuerkarte the Gross Payment and Tax Deducted for the relevant tax year which she must forward to her (German) Tax Office.

Your local Tax Office may be able to shed more light on this issue.
