Notice Period

Teen Smow has decided he wants to move back home and he has already had an interview and been offered a job for 10k more than he is getting Now. He has spoken to his current bosses but they say he can’t just give a months notice, as you apparently can’t give notice mid month, and so he cannot leave till 31st July. Yet he knows that his main manager is off for last two weeks of July and that’s why - they want him to cover that. Any suggestions, as new job is asking when he can start!

Give new employers a start date as thats the most important thing at the moment, they obviously want him to start ASAP.

I would just hand notice in tomorrow with a months notice and put the ball in his current employers court. They cannot force him to stay. Is his current employer part of a group or just a stand alone company? It seems him staying is for their convenience not his and he doesn't want to lose this new opportunity. Advise new employer of start date.
Thanks Tony. Considering how sensible teen Smow is I’ve just found he’s done what I think it a really daft thing!! His old school mates down here were so excited than he was moving back that they arranged with him for them to all go to Holland for the weekend, visit the Heineken factory etc, and fly home on the Monday. He’s agreed to start the new job on the Tuesday!!
