Teen Smow has decided he wants to move back home and he has already had an interview and been offered a job for 10k more than he is getting Now. He has spoken to his current bosses but they say he can’t just give a months notice, as you apparently can’t give notice mid month, and so he cannot leave till 31st July. Yet he knows that his main manager is off for last two weeks of July and that’s why - they want him to cover that. Any suggestions, as new job is asking when he can start!

Here are
as I said earlier just hand his notice in tomorrow. What are they going to do? I would take accrued holidays, as given employers current stance they are unlikely to pay him for them without a fight IMO.
Give new employers a start date as thats the most important thing at the moment, they obviously want him to start ASAP.

His top manager has literally just this second emailed him and said he CANNOT Leave before 31st July, even tho he has offered to work late/early/ weekends, anything to make up the time and help

Thankyou x
His current employer must be a bit daft if they insist he stays - disgruntled employee behaviour coming up !
Question Author
Well exactly!
I would just hand notice in tomorrow with a months notice and put the ball in his current employers court. They cannot force him to stay. Is his current employer part of a group or just a stand alone company? It seems him staying is for their convenience not his and he doesn't want to lose this new opportunity. Advise new employer of start date.

Mr Smow checked contract and advised him to just give a months notice, which he did yesterday. Handed manager the envelope and he didn’t even open it.
Brilliant news Smow. He can now give new employer a start date, just take the holidays he has got accrued.

Thanks Tony. Considering how sensible teen Smow is I’ve just found he’s done what I think it a really daft thing!! His old school mates down here were so excited than he was moving back that they arranged with him for them to all go to Holland for the weekend, visit the Heineken factory etc, and fly home on the Monday. He’s agreed to start the new job on the Tuesday!!
Lol Smow he's still got some growing up to do, but let him have some fun with his old friends, providing he doesn't have to many Amsterdam cafe cigarettes. lol
Question Author
That’s what I mean lol - he’s never smoked in his life and barely even drinks. Boys!!
Hopefully his friends will realise he starts work the next day. Are you or Mr Smow able to give some words of advice? He cant start his first day stoned.
or maybe he should back out of hol somehow?
The extra 10K should make not going an easy choice.
Cant already be all booked yet if he put in his notice yesterday. If you can talk to his friends and suggest a date a month or 2 along the line once he is back home and got settled in his job.
