Is it a mistake to give up a good job in the states in midst of a globe pandemic so that my husband can do a 4 year low paying post doc at Cambridge? If I do move with him and our two children, how hard will it be as an American to get a job in Cambridge?

if you have the requisite needed qualifications maybe.
but people are losing their jobs all over the place, its
going to be an age before we stabilise.
do you mean Cambridge University? or in Cambridge itself, suggest you try, and this depends on what you can do, find agencies here - send in a CV and see what happens,
personally i wouldn't do this now, the job market is too volatile and good people are being laid off already
I think the husband is considering taking up some sort of research post at Cambridge University- the post says post doctorate so that means he already has a PhD.
It might not be to difficult to get a job but it may not come anywhere near your current level of renumeration or in your own area of expertise.
No one knows which decisions are "mistakes" until after the event.

If he wants to do it and as a family you can afford it, then that's your answer. The benefit of doing what you want in life is worth quite a bit of financial tightness. Just needs to decide how important it is to you both.
Its a non starter. Both countries are pretty much in a travel lockdown. I am amazed that the Uni is still offering jobs.
‘ how hard will it be as an American to get a job in Cambridge?’
Completely depends on your skill set / experience. What are those?
i think you need a visa too dont you to get a job over here as an american?
Cambridge is a beautiful city and the opportunity to live there for a while would be a great experience for the whole family. It has easy transport links to London, and the midlands; fabulous health and education facilities and is affluent and safe.

On the other hand, it is one of the most expensive places to live and if your life style depends on you being able to earn a particular salary level then you would need to research your own prospects and the cost of accomodation, before making any decisions.

Being a multicultural university city and close the US Air base at Mildenhall, there is no issue with you being American when it comes to recruitment.

All assuming this is post lockdown of course.
is that true though? I ask because i'm sure you have to have a work visa to work here if you are an american. I used to work with a girl from florida and she couldn't work here until she got married to an english person

Being able to work depends on visa type, in my case I would be able to work. I have a BFA but I’d be looking for office work. I would need at least a part time job and it wouldn’t be until September so hopefully the lockdown is over by then.
You also have to consider school places for the children
Question Author
Yes definitely school places would be in order, it’s a bit tricky right now, they have closed down the normal process of application but will make special accommodation for people moving from overseas.
are you joking ?
