....top legal minds on cancel culture fear. // The report, which has been drawn up by top QC Frances Hoare with a forward by former Supreme Court judge Lord Sumption, has detailed an assault on freedom of speech through recent hate crime legislation and workplace practices. It follows concerns that so-called “cancel culture” by woke institutions and activists is leading to people being forced out of their jobs, blocked from speaking, facing legal action or banned from social media platforms.....The 50 page report has proposed six eforms designed to give UK citizens the same protection as the First Amendment to the US Constitution.
These include a recommendation that the police should lose the power to investigate so-called “non-crime hate incidents” and the Scottish Hate Crime Bill should be scrapped.//

Not before time. And just as TTT posts his Bob the Builder thread too.

Is common sense going to prevail at last? We can only hope.
Danny, what? Are you hoping that Gito Hari will be uncancelled? ('Oh, come on now, Ted - with a quizzical but puzzled look)

Atheist, yesterday you complained that I never tell you you’ve made an interesting point. That could be because I’ve never really noticed you making a point that is directly related to the question but merely making not-so-smart remarks to other members here. What do you think of this new initiative? Do you think it’s a big step in the right direction - or would be you against such legislation?

The term 'hate crime' can be used to describe a range of criminal behaviour where the perpetrator is motivated by hostility or demonstrates hostility towards the victim's disability, race, religion, sexual orientation or transgender identity.

These aspects of a person's identity are known as 'protected characteristics'. A hate crime can include verbal abuse, intimidation, threats, harassment, assault and bullying, as well as damage to property. The perpetrator can also be a friend, carer or acquaintance who exploits their relationship with the victim for financial gain or some other criminal purpose.

Which hate crimes do you think should be decriminalised and which should not?

I'm happy for them all to remain as crimes.
Atheist,s life seems to be occupied with complaining about one thing or another.
Naomi, I think that free speech should be upheld as much as possible, but that there will need to be some control over it so as to restrain those who seek to destroy the coherence of society by fomenting hatred and fear. Such control will be difficult to impose, because there will be a a multitude of different views and attitudes, and there will always be people who think that the balance between freedom and control is not to their liking. There isn't a simple answer or formula. And following on from that.....

I am curious to know what right-thinking people think of the silencing of Gito Hari. I didn't have him down as left-wingish. Perhaps he heard that Johnson is about to convert and has in fact admitted to Gito that he secretly takes the knee himself every morning.
Ellipsis, nobody is complaining about hate crimes but about the non-crime hate incidents.
You can't go around spouting hate crimes when it is offending people.
LOL, Naomi tells someone off for expressing an opinion on a thread about free speech!
Dannyk13 on the bob the builder thread I made it clear that the induvial police offers can't dictate what is worthy as a hate crime or non-crime hate incident so they must report each incident.

Zacs, atheist didn’t express an opinion. He asked a question. Read his post again.

Do you have an opinion?
I’m a bit afraid to make it, in case you try to shut me down.

You’ll disappear up your own fundament one day, Naomi.
> Ellipsis, nobody is complaining about hate crimes but about the non-crime hate incidents.

The quote in the OP has several references to hate crime. Even the link contains the words "hate-crime-legislation" in the URL. I think it's fair to ask what elements of hate crime should be decriminalised.
Your always up yours zacs, what’s it like?
Question Author
No chance, zacs.
Ey up, Naomi the cavalry have arrived! PMSL.

Ah, a soggy fundament.
Question Author
No chance zacs.
Not again, a good OP bought down by Aethist and ZM again.

WHY?

If you have an opinion post it, if you want to just attack other posters clear off.

Naomi/Danny, I too hope common sense will start to prevail. This is a start.
