Hi There,

I would be grateful for your advice. I do contract work as a locum solicitor and I will be off work for the next 3 weeks leading up to Christmas. I was wondering how I should best use that time off.  Should I familiarize myself with the latest AI developments as this seems to be the biggest business development for a generation, should I practice my creative writing (an interest that I am hoping to make money with) or should I learn to touch type by practising for 6-8 hours each day. I would be grateful for your thoughts.

Kind Regards

Richard

Well, I write and I find the secretarial course that I did in  the late 1960's invaluable regarding the touch-typing.  I struggle with computers because I tend to treat them like old Imperial typewriters and bash the keys down - then it jumps etc....  So, yes, typing is useful. There's a caveat - you cannot really improve creative writing by just doing it every...

My nephew is a barrister and he supplements his income by acting as a legal representative for the police who have to provide legal representation for arrested persons.

Sorry for the vague response.

I confess that I'm no expert but your creative writing needs work.

And with a Rapier like wit Douglas swoops in.

10.40 there's a time and place for your quips, which isn't now imho. I think the op would appreciate solid advice.

As you've previously said you're not a fast typist, practice that, but maybe only 3-4 hours a day, which would leave time for creative writing.

Touch typing will always come in useful, it might also speed up the creative writing process, though I doubt you need to do 6-8 hours a day

Empowerer, as I  don't remember seeing any questions or answers from you in the past, I decided to read your previous posts and I noticed that although you are kind enough to give best answer to some, you don't actually come back after asking your questions to either thank someone or tell us what you have decided to do.

I don't know if that is because you don't know how to do that, or if it is for some other reason, so on this occasion, I have decided not to answer your question.

If you comment on this, I will reconsider.

Go for the fun option.

To me, that means creative writing.  I love writing performance poetry (and then getting up on stage to actually perform it).  I also enjoy working on my children's novel.

You do enough 'work' already.  It's time to think 'fun'!

2-3 hours of each of AI learning, creative writing and touch typing ...

This poster has not had a single post, I smell something.....

TTT see my post @12.41

... I did, 6 questions in 2.5 years not a single response?

Yes, very strange.

Creative Writing every time - much more fun.

touch typing - never regretted it - 6-8 hours a day for 28 days seems excessive and you will know when you can do it....

then creative novels - but I wd do Dickens

and a little week end somewhere where they have a log fire

Well, I write and I find the secretarial course that I did in  the late 1960's invaluable regarding the touch-typing.  I struggle with computers because I tend to treat them like old Imperial typewriters and bash the keys down - then it jumps etc....  So, yes, typing is useful.

There's a caveat - you cannot really improve creative writing by just doing it every so often, you need to be writing most days, even if it is just a little.  Grab the first stimulus to hand  - I've just looked up and seen a Victorian ornamental piece of china, for instance - and time yourself to write something about it, say 10 mins.  It's gymnastics for the creative impulse.  Then set about what you think you want to write.  Keep all the bits you scribble, by the way - you'll be amazed  and something may leap to your attention and start you on another piece.

Hope this helps.

@ Jourdain:  Did you get started on a Scottish Field entry - just wondering?x

Thanks for asking Hazlinny.  I've conjured up a setting and some characters.  They are now mulling around in my brain whilst another children's story about Laking Tyke finds its way onto paper.  I've been nattered by a few of the local children and had to say I didn 't have an idea - but now I have!  With a following wind I should have it finished by the end of the week and then I'll prod the smouldering embers - it may be a smiling  housekeeper to a small ,stately lodge used as a holiday home toklet out..........

^^ It would be fantastic if your entry won 😊 Jourdain.

Barsel - seems you were correct and that this poster does not have either i the ability to answer or ii the will (and manners) to do so.

Perhaps he will explain.
