Well the question i would really like an answer to is that if i don't want to go to a polytechnic after my o'levels, then what other choices do i have?(as in still wanting to study ; but study what?)besides college...are there any other courses which i can study which can then allow me to futher my studies for a degree?

I think your first point of call may be the careers service (now called Connexions, I think) and speak to an advisor. They'll ask you about the type of work that you want to do and where you think your strengths lie, eg are you analytical, practical, academic, creative, etc.
Once you've sorted out what you're good at and the type of work you want to do, have a look at the learndirect www.learndirect.co.uk website where they give a description of jobs. These pages also explain the qualifications needed and how to go about getting them: on-the-job training, apprenticeships etc.
