what would happen if i happened to be away on holiday when my gcse results are to be collected on that very day??

As said, they could post them or you could collect them at a later date.

It's impossible to expect everyone to be around on that particular day. What if you were ill or had an accident for example.

Don't worry about it.

If you have a relative or someone you want to pick them up, so you can find out that very day, you can send a letter to your school stating something like "I authorise so and so to collect my results" and sign it. Ask your teacher what specifically they require at your school. My aunt has done this every other year for my cousins who live nearby as they are always on holiday when exam results come out.
