Hi I stared a new job last week, I have not worked for 8 years. I handed in my P45 and we all got paid, myself and another woman got 40 less than others, is this because we are the only ones who are married. There are 11 of us all started at the same time. Some have been working others not. There has been a mix up with the pay slips being sent to to wrong branch so we can't check them.

Just wondered if anyone knew and do we contact the tax office or does it sort its self?

What tax code have they used (should show on your payslip)?

I don't think being married makes a difference but maybe the others are getting child tax credit or working tax credit or whatever it's called.

Sorry, have just noticed that you can't check your payslip! I would contact the payroll dept and ask about your tax code.

I am getting tax credits but the other woman who is married as well isn't. I'll just have to wait until I get my pay slip.

Thanks anyway

It is possible that you are on "emergency tax" if the tax office/company haven't sorted out your tax/P45 etc. yet. This means you'd pay a bit more tax than normal, but once you get your proper tax code you should pay less tax. You will get this back from the tax office (eventually) - takes months usually! But without having your pay slip, its difficult to know what's gone on.
You will be on emergency rate because the P45 you gave them is (presumably) from your last job and is 8 years old and therefore holds no useable information for the tax office. Effectively you start as a "tax week one" employee. It will get sorted and you'll be refunded any extra tax paid.
