call centre /customer service work

As you may know i work in retail at the moment but have some office experience. Would it be a step up or down the ladder to work in a call/customer service centre for a while?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Hi..I did office work for some time, call centre jobs are stressful,but can be loads more fun..Due to the nature of the industry I have found it easier to get ahead in call centre jobs than administration or retail.
The opportunities are their to become team leaders/manager/ call centre managers within a reasonably short space of time,as it doesn't take long to get experienced because your on the phone all day.
I would say go for it if your looking for a more interesting job, try to find something in a sector that interests you.

I am a graduate and stuck in a retail rut at the moment, i dont want to work i a call centre long term but hope that being in an office environment for a while will enable me to get a job perhaps in local government or the charity sector. This is what i want to do.

Steve, if you want to work in the voluntary sector, do some voluntary work (however little) or become a supporter of a local organisation in the specific interest area you have. There are hundreds of roles and varying commitment. I still have commitments although I'm teaching now. Call centres are good stop-gaps but they can be soul destroying unless you know how to work them, as it were. I use them for temping when necessary.
I have not applied yet. Just sitting here at the table with my laptop and lots of jobs i have printed off. Though some are voluntary things that i think might be good on CV and give me help to get on.
I have done voluntary work and would do it again but cant motivate myself to go back to the same charity office where i was before. What i should do is go back to this charity office to volunteer whilst looking for the job i want to do. My retail job is only part time so keep me in a bit of money but i have to move on.
I am very depressed at the moment and trying to deal with a number of things so its really demoaralising sitting here trying to apply for jobs i know i wont get.
When I worked in my office, they hived off a lot of experienced staff , gave them a pay rise and put them in their new call centre, so it actually was seen as a good move to get in there!
So personally I would not view it as a step down from retail.
I also worked in BT some years ago in the directory enquiries office which was one of the very first 'call centres' although it was not called that! It was very stressful even then, as you were expected to work without a moments rest, were not allowed to chat and had to ask permission to go to the loo!

To work in a call centre is a good carrier path to grow. On a salary part call centres are doing really good and one will get a good working environment and infrastructure. Good appraisals , Knowledge transfer , Training sessions are many more things are the part of call centres which help us to grow and our company as well.
Reputated organizations are working on latest technologies which will help you to gain great experience.
