hi all im just wondering what qualification would i need to do this job? would a city and guilds be ok?

Whilst having a City & Guilds would no doubt assist you, the one thing most people look for when taking on a painter/decorator is experience and ability. This is why so many people get a referral from a friend or relative who've used them before.

noknowledge is a good name for you !!! That statment offends me let alone a decorator who has spent 3 yrs training in an apprenticeship, learning and perfecting his skill's and aquiring his qualifications. How dare you describe a persons job as menial... Just because you can open a tin of paint and slap it on a wall does not by no means qualify you to be a decorator . There is so much more to it than that. Good decorators are few and far between you should see my fathers work and his marbling effects he does with a feather. I soppose you're job is really exciting and not menial at all is it !!!

Yes city & guilds is ok providing you're C&G is in painting and decorating that is and you have the craft and advanced craft certificates. But as mehlindi points out experiance as well as qualification is just as important, that is why people have appreticeships, to gain skills and experience before been let out onto the big wide world. I do belive that NVQ 2 and NVQ3 has now replaced C&G craft /advancedcraft certs. But both are accepted.

No knowledge - your perception of a painter and decorator is very sad. It appears you have a great deal to learn - I earn my living doing just that and I also offer handyman services, and do you know what? I have not one scrap of paper to say I am qualified. What I do pocess if 56 years of living and learning and a lot of common sense, and always prepared to work to achieve good results in whatever task is presented. Of course, you have to realise your capabilities and when to draw the line in some of the jobs that are asked of me to do. With an attitude like yours I can only assume that your capabilities are very low, apart from trying to dissolution MACKAB24 from achieving his goal. The one task I would really relish in is to take you on my next job and see how long you lasted (the first hour I think). Could you paper a ceiling without any visible joints? Oh! by the way MACKAB24 very best of luck and if you get any customers like 'No Knowedge' just do what I do 'just get back in the van - and go to the next job', or charge him double !
