i have been with a company for a year get paid weekly and cant find out what my notice period would be how do i find out without asking its not in my contract.

do you have a personell department that you could ask in confidence? How about a friend in the company? In any case as you have been their for a year It is probably 4 weeks that you will be required to give. However, seeing as you get paid weekly, would it really do you any financial damage if you only gave them a week notice? This is assuming you have a new job to go to. Notice periods are a way of giving the company time to find a replacement, their part of the deal is that they make sure your wages are fully paid,To avoid difficulties, Id give them 4 weeks

There is statutory notice and contractual notice and they may not be the same.

If there is nothing in the employment contract to say any different, the statutory notice period is the minimum. This statutory notice is one week if you have been employed more than 4 weeks but less than 2 years, then one week's notice for every complete year of service up to 12 weeks (which occurs at 12 years service).

Buildersmate - you have described the notice period to given by the EMPLOYER if they wish to dismiss the employee. For the employee it is normally stated in the contract of employment. Failing that I have always understood that the employee can give the same period of notice as their pay period ie one week for those paid weekly and one month for those paid monthly.
