My daughter is doing a degree at university in TV production ,absolutely loving it, working v hard and getting good marks. Problem is she needs to get a job as a "runner" to get some real hands on experience. The agencies say she needs experience before they will take her on, so how on earth is she supposed to do that, when nobody will take her on. Incidentally the only person on her course with the experience and getting loads of work is a lad that lived next door to a TV producer in his home town prior to starting uni and obviously had lots voluntary or otherwise work before starting uni. Any thoughts very much appreciated. thanks in advance.

Go to the BBC jobs page- they have lots of placements and she can apply online. Most are 2-4 weeks over the summer but they vary. I would advise her to go for one that nobody else is going to go for! Eg- world service above BBC comedy, so she stands a better chance. Also I would directly contact the production company that makes her favourite programmes such as Talkback etc. They all have websites, so she could enquire online first and then send in an application form. If really stuck, she could write to a producer of a programme she loves and offer her services over the summer. If she writes enough letters, she is bound to get something!!
It's always the same in any job - if you know someone then you have an advantage so if you have any strings pull them. If not she just has to apply to lots and lots of places in the hope that one will take her on
