Notice to quit rented property
1. Would the following text of an email sent to me at my work email by my landlord from his work email address constitute a legal notice to quit rented property? Our tenancy commenced on 2 May 2007 and was for an initial 6 mth period paid monthly. No further agreement was signed but we have continued to pay on a monthly basis so I assume we are now classed as being on a periodic tenancy.
2. Does the fact that I replied to the email - albeit in a non-commital way - alter my legal position?
3. I have no quarrel with the Landlord but he needs the house back. However, I may have difficulty finding an alternate rental property for the family before "early July". Is there a formal way I can / should respond to what I currently consider a technically improper notice or should I wait until he seeks possession?

Dear xxx
I believe that I must provide 2 months notice according to our tenancy agreement - please accept this email as notice.
If its convenient I think we would like to take repossession early July. "
