HELP! Contact employer or not!

I am applying for a job and the age old question comes up 'Can we contact your current employer for a reference?'

Now they give you the option, and I have rang them to seek advice from the HR (as they stated that they are happy to help with the application), but what's best?

1) Say yes and risk upsetting boss and know full well if I don't get the job I'll have hell?

or

2) Say no and risk this going against me?

I feel it is unfair to ask this as we all can't be successful applicant but those who are unsuccessful will be greeted with a bad atmosphere in work!

Whenever I've come up against this question on an application form I've always ticked the YES box and then written at the side AFTER INTERVIEW.
If you don't reach the interview stage then there is no harm done with your current employer.
If you do reach the interview stage explain you are a caring, loyal employee and do not want to upset your current employer by having him/her thinking you want to leave.
Most references are only taken up AFTER someone has been offered the job.

It should not really go against you. The interviewing company will be aware that not everyone will tell the currecnt employer of looking for another job. I have always said do not contact current employer and it has never gone against me. Most contracts these days are subject to references so if they are bad, you will just be let go from the new job.

Thank you both for your answers. I'm very stressed about it as my current employer is a bit of a hot head and will probably come down on me if she knew!

I tried for a job internally and was basically told after interview that there would be a big hole if I left as they can never find someone to do my job! Hence didn't get the internal job!

Don't panic !...AND STOP GETTING STRESSED.

Rule of life : THINK OF NUMBER 1.

Lets hope if your boss finds out about your application for other work he or she will have the brains to work out why you want to leave.

The company will carry on long after you leave, and remember your certainly not irreplaceable
