If I've got no admin work to do at work
7 Answers
should I start cleaning this place up? Its a tip this office and I didn't contribute to the state of it. I feel I am taken for a mug at work as I make the drinks and do the washing up and all the crappy jobs like that so even though I wouldn't mind doing a bit of tidying up of the office I don't know if I should as I might get even more taken for granted of. I cleaned the kitchen cupboard the other day and I have re-organised the filing cabinet several times in the four years I've been here but should I actually do things like hoovering and sorting out the junk and paperwork we don't need if I have nothing else to do?

It's not that I don't want to because I'm lazy it's just a case of principles, whether I should carry out all the crappy tasks just because I have no admin work they can give me, even though I am an admin assistant not a cleaner. I guess I just need to look at is as though I am putting my all into this job and going the extra mile too even if it isn't pleasant - like you say someone should notice my hard work etc. Then in the meantime I'll find a job where I get more admin work so I don't have to find things like cleaning to do.
I did go to the interview last Friday, bless you for remembering, it was ok I had 3 people interviewing me which was really scary as originally they said 2 people and I thought that was bad enough. They didn't ask too many questions though, they were just talking about what they were looking for in an employee. Just waiting to hear now.
I have applied to another job at hospital too so waiting to hear if I will get interview for that one and going to apply for everything that I think is suitable.

I think you are doing the right thing by tidying up when you are not busy. I don't think I would go as far as getting the hoover out, though. Is there actually someone employed as an office cleaner ? If so, I wouldn't do much cleaning. Tidying and keeping my own desk/area clean but not general cleaning.
A far as making the drinks and doing the washing up goes,it depends whether you have been asked to do these jobs, or you have taken it upon yourself. If you decided to do this, I'd just stop doing everyone's and just make my own drink and wash up my own dishes.
You have to be a bit careful about the difference between seeming keen/eager to work and looking as though you have nothing to do and therefore expendable.
Good luck with your interviews.
