I have an interview this tue for adult nursing! Apparantly they ask you where you see yourself in 5 years! Obviusly its going to be in nursing..... but how can i possibly know what appeals to me until ive done placements etc Not sure how to answer....and panicing! does any abbers have any advice? thanks julie

Why not say what you've said here - but try not to make it sound dismissive of the somewhat stereotyped question. Also make a few suggestions as to which aspect currently interests you, but clearly indicate you may well diverge from this if you find some aspect which particularly grabs your interest and matches the skill you have.

This is often a standard and somewhat stupid question intended to establish whether you have any ideas about where accepting this job (if offered) may lead you. The opposite end of the answer scale is 'I'm only here 'cos of the money'.
The right answer is something along the lines of 'I enjoy working with people who are need help. It gives me a great thrill to see them recovering and restoring them back to a normal or as near-normal lifestyle as possible. I would enjoy the technical side of the job - the use of technical equipment in nursing these days to improve survivor rates. I would anticipate experiencing as many placement areas as I can in the first instance, then choose to specialise in one area - it is a little early to know which one for sure but I enjoy xyz very much at present'.

I'm assuming you're applying for the full three year nursing course, in which case you could say that you see yourself installed on a ward or in the community or whatever.
You could also say what aspect of nursing particularly interests you at the moment, and that you see yourself working in that area, but that you hope your training will help you determine whether or not it's the right area for you. A friend, for instance, had a desire to specialise in cardiac nursing, but has ended up in respiratory work after a particularly successful placement there.
Another thing to think about is that in 5 years' time you may well be looking towards a more advanced qualification in whatever will be your specialism, or possibly find yourself moving towards a teaching or training role.
As buildersmate says, the question is primarily designed to test how much you have really thought about what you're doing, and to make sure this application isn't just something that seemed like a good idea at the time. At the end of the day they want committed people.
