isn't it in the schools best intrests to get as many students as many gcses at c or above as possible?

But this one person who gets a's in his exams was off sick when the teacher wnated the coursework in, but not the official moderating deadline when it has to be sent away.

Because of this, and the teacher said that his mum could have brought it in (she couldn't possibly because the whole family was ill aswell) he wasn't going to mark it, which meant that it counted as a non submission, so he'll be entered for the foundation paper, can he do this?

a-v this person was seriously ill and couldn't get the work in, and some of you are talking about it as if it happened to me, i am asking on behalf of a friend. I always meet my deadlines.
I think your friend should have sorted this out in the week before easter, if your teacher gives you a deadline then you have to work to that. your friends mom can phone the school after easter and plead with senior staff but in my opinion your teacher has not acted out of line.
my daughters school allow work to be emailed or sent in early, they dont accept work after a deadline. its a deadline for a reason. your friend will have to accept he could have done more to stop this situation happening.
i thought it was the maths teacher you moaned about?
Just because the work itself didn't have to be sent to the moderator doesn't mean the teacher didn't have to submit the marks to the exam board by this deadline. Also, although i admit I'm a bit out of touch with this, I would have thought that exam entries to the foundation, intermediate, higher papers will have had to have been made well before Easter. If he's normally an 'A' student there will be more to this than meets the eye.
imagine there are 30 pupils in the class. the external moderation is so that someone else can look at the teachers marks and say they are reasonable. Therefore the teacher has to mark ALL of the work before the external moderation date. As the teacher is teaching all day, it means they have to do the marking outside of school time. the teacher gave a date for it to be in whereby he then has time to mark them all before they all go off for external moderation, and has planned that time. If someone hands it in late it would mean the teacher has to mark in his own time - why should he? It also means that the pupil has had far longer than everyone else to complete the work. Both of those seem more unfair to me.
Just another point.

somebody misses a deadline at school and you think it's not fair that the work can't be handed in late.

I will give you a clue, once you get out in the real world if you miss a deadline you very likely lose your job, get used to it and don't miss deadlines.
And another point.

In this day and age to say work couldn't be handed in because the whole family was ill and they live out in the sticks doesn't wash I'm afraid. As you are his friend why didn't he ask you to bring it in?

we didn't realsie it would be such a problem.

Anyway i've asked someone who has geography with the other teacher and they don't have to hand theirs in until after the holidays, and we got the work at the same time because everyone who does geography in ym year group went on the same field trip to collect the data.
you know mollykins, I think you have been given some good advice, if your friends mom wants to argue the toss the so be it, I think your teacher has been fine and by giving a deadline has given sufficient time to get things done or query any problems. no amount of "but but but" will change the that.
Irrelevant. If you have been told to do something, you must do it in the timeframe given. You will find it hard to find employment after school with your attitude.

For Funks Sake its not my attitude, this has happened to my friend, i handed my coursework in about a month ago. I get mine in on time and he couldn't.
then stop arguing on his behalf... he should acknowledge that he is to blame.
Question Author
Bednobs, its the lack of maths teachers i complained about, not any specific one, we're getting anew one after the easter holidays, i think that'll be our 12th.
Question Author
he was seriously ill and couldn't hand it in cazzz.
could he hand it in a month prior like you did?

being an A student that should be easy
couldnt he give you the coursework to hand in for him?, couldnt he email it? couldnt someone in his family mention hand it in before easter
Question Author
I had less coursework to do than him, two of his subjects are comprised of 100% coursework and no exams.
If he was seriously ill he should have applied for mitigating circumstances, like I mentioned earlier. Waiting until after the hand in date has gone and then saying he'll hand in after the holidays isn't very fair on the teacher. If he's planning on going to uni he'll have to get used to either meeting deadlines or communicating any problems well in advance.
this close to deadline his work should have been completed, especially if he is a A student.

I suggest he reads the advice people have given....no one is going to agree that your teacher was "out of line" im afraid..
Lol chuck, your post on page 1 made me laugh, and I am glad I wasnt the first one to say something.... but!

Firstly, with my brother being the exams officer at a secondary school, I know just how much he can have to mark at one time, and therefore I think it is pretty straight forward for deadlines to be set, and if people want stuff marked, they hand it in before!

If they let one person get away with it for some reason, where do they have to draw the line?

Secondly.. Can you post something that doesnt turn into moaning about something or someone at some point? Bad enough moaning for yourself, but then moaning for someone else!?

Ok, now I sound harsh, but rant over! :-)
