I can't remember the figure but at the the moment there are more unemployed uni graduates than ever before, and that percentage will just rise.

If I fail a year of sixth form and have to do year 14, I don't think i'd have to pay (well not all of it at least) because my dad would be retired and mum probably won't have a job.
But some unis won't accept people who did resits. Plus I don't think i could physically bring myself to fail tests that important on purpose.

They will get loans which they will then pay back when they have employment and a reasonable salary. This is not unusual in other countries I believe. If you want something badly enough then you will not be deterred by having to pay for it. It will sort the wheat out from the chaff in my opinion and only those who really want to go to Uni and achieve good results will actually apply.
Uni students have always worked and played hard. The trouble is now that many of them just want to play hard. They perhaps won't feel like that if they have to pay back their fees.
Nothing in life worth having comes without a price.

Well they're obviously going to carry debts through into the rest of their lives!
I love Spocks idea of worthless degrees.
Media studies - yes good idea let's make the future television program makers, magazine editors etc. all do degrees in engineering!
Psycology - I don't understand that therefore it must be worthless - certainly not of use to people in advertising for example!
Actually there's another point here
There's a Cap of 9,000 but we don't know which Universities will charge this and which will charge lesser amounts.
Students selecting Universities now are being asked to make a choice not knowing how much they will have to pay!
Still, nice to reflect that Eton and Harrow are still charities eh?

Unfortunately, we most of us have to carry debts for our life if we want something badly enough, i.e. a nice home, a nice car and now a nice education. The country is broke we can't afford to dole out money to students any more. They are not being asked to fork it out up front and they won't be paying it back until they reach a salary of £21,000 plus and then they will have a very good rate of interest.

Some poor pupils are educated free & maintain charity status for schools. All charities charge for their income but their taxable rates are void.

But Molly, they can afford it if they get a loan. A lot of people, I grant you, will not want to burden themselves with a loan and that is their choice. But if something is worthwhile you will have to accept the bad along with the good. I have known students who run up literally thousands in debts because of their lifestyle, others have scraped by and lived wisely. Basically, unless these fees are charged the Universities will not survive as they are now and will have to reduce staff numbers and drop their standards.
Universities who are charging the higher rates are also being asked to give grants for the poor students anyway.
Will these fees make you any less keen to go to University Molly? In the long run if you go you will be the winner with a better chance of a good job and a good future. The loan will seem like chicken feed.

I remember attending my daughter's graduation and the guest speaker was some big bod from I think Tarmac UK. In his speech he apologised to the graduates saying it was possibly the worst time in history for them to find a job suitable for their degrees.
My daughter worked part-time at Tesco whilst she was a student, and after graduation she took any job going. It took her 5 years to get a job she actually wanted, and which made use of her language skills, but she still managed to pay off her student debt before she was 30.
