Hi,
If my place of work is closed due to bad weather, am I entitled to pay if it is my contracted day? I understand the policy if I am unable to get to work I take unpaid leave or holiday but if they have made the decision is it still the case?
Thank you

this happened to my husband last year - struggled through the snow, only to find they'd closed the site. He was made to make up the time, although the unions opposed it he still had to so i'm presuming it's legal as the unions where he works are fairly arsey (they are currently balloting on strike action because their payrise isn't enough!)
there are people all over the place getting laid off or taking pay cuts and they've turned down a devcent rise (the union that is) idiots!

Thanks for your answer, I have just found something on direct.gov that says they can't dock pay if they close so hopefully should be ok! Typical unions by the way!!
i would be really interested to see the link if you have it please????? I think the same thing might happen this year

hey thanks, i'll send that to him - hopefully they'll refund him the 3 day's pay/time!
Yes, I suppose that it can't be too often that the OP manages to find the answer to the question correctly themselves in spite of the 'opinion' from an answer that is incorrect.
The Direct Gov site has developed into an extremely useful tool to these sorts of employment issues.
thanks for asking this question.

I'm almost certain my employer (who closed for the last 3 days) will tell us they are under no obligation to pay us as the 'snow was not their fault' but with this useful link I shall be able to tell them they must or I will take it further
