New Law to Allow Employers to Promote a Woman over a Man...even though the man is better qualified. The law is being introduced to allow companies balance out the number of women in a company to the same number as male employees. It is the front page headline in the Daily Telegraph. Does anyone have any thoughts or feelings about this??

I know Naomi. The aim of single status was meant to give everyone a fair wage, but the bottom levels have gone up along with management and everyone else has gone down - it's sickening. We could easily clean the place (we usually have to anyway!) but the cleaner couldn't do our jobs.

NI was a place where you could have been discriminated against because of religion. People were 'Protestants' or 'Catholics' whether they liked it or not. So legislation to recruit so that the religious make-up of the police would represent the wider community was brought in.
I'm sure Jewish or Islamic recruits could walk into a job.

If it were me, I'd be wondering what the point of getting an education was!! If you're getting the same pay you may as well work minimum hours with no responsibility. I can't believe it!! (Oh, but I do).

whilst im totally in favour of women being promoted over men for once, and i see that it does go someway towards redressing the balance...but...i have to agree that it should go on merit and ability not gender...

Facts should never be an obstacle to a sensational newspaper article.

This will help employers achieve a more diverse workforce by giving them the option, when faced with candidates of equal merit, to choose a candidate from an under-represented group."

So long as they're not forced to choose a minority over an equally qualified majority...

positive discrimination is a crock of sh!t and should be consigned to the wastebasket of history, as should gender quotas.
An example of how ludicrous it is: my local area had elections a couple of years back (in Ireland). One of the local parties wanted to field 3 candidates for the 3 seats. Only three men applied - all very qualified, all very politically active. No women applied. So the party, who have gender quotas, allowed only two of the men to go forward and no third candidate. So in that case any woman - regardless of background or merits - would automatically have been chosen over candidate three soley on the basis that she has a vagina in her pants.
