My wife was made redundant last wednesday. She works in the care industry and has exprience in hands on domicillary care as well as being a care coordinator and more recently, an assistant manager for a company providing domicillary care.
But, in her quest for a new job, someone has suggested to her about becoming a private, self employed carer. My wife has all the relevent qualifications...NVQ3 in health and social care, moving and handling and a large number of other courses and certificates for the care industry.
Would anyone know about this....we appreciate she would have to be enhanced CRB checked and maybe registered with the local authority etc etc.
If anyone has any info on this, we'd be most grateful.
sorry to hear this HM, she had only just started hadn't she?
Anyway, i'm not sure what you are suggesting is feasible. Only employers can apply for CRB checks and as you probably know, each employer has to do their own one, even if you are working concurrently for 2 employers. How would she get clients? when people need carers privately they usually go to an agency. when the council is responsible for finding carers they go to an agency too.
I have done some googling and it seems that the way to do it is to register with a care agency...they get the CRB and find the placements. Apparently what you wife wants to do is called being a care worker. Carers are people who do it for close friends or relis without payment. If you google self employed care worker there is all kinds of info.
