An aquantance of mine has moved/ fled to Australia, leaving behind debts to the bank and credit card companies of approaching 100K. He wants to apply for Australian citizenship once his work visa runs out. Are they likely to find out about his unpaid debts in this country? And also, if he re-enters this country, is anyone likely to find out and do something about it? I personally think it is very, very wrong.

unles he did this in a fraudelent way, then he should not have any problems.its a civil debt, not a criminal one.
no one will find out unless theres a court warrant for his arrest, which wont happen unless he has comitted a criminal offence. he can be summonsed to court by debt companies but its civil not criminal. His best bet was to declare himself bankrupt, then he wouldnt have to pay everything back if he hadn't any means to, or better still, change his name. Dont worry about it, or speak to citizens advice. Dont judge him either, im sure he's run away for a reason, it better he does that then kill himself or something. Its only money.
