Fir Trees

I was just wondering if anyone knew if there was anything that could be done regarding fir tree's in my neighbour's garden.

They are currently covering the whole of my back garden with the shadow of them and stand taller that the house.

I have spoken to the local council, who have informed me that they can come out and look at anything over 2 meters tall, however, if they decide that they are too tall (and they did say that on the phone, if they do stand higher that the house then they are deemed as "too tall") and need to be cut down, then they hire someone to come in and do it, however I have to foot the bill as it is myself that has complained!!

I don't see why I should have to pay for this, as they are not my property, also, there are other neighbours that want them to come down, not just myself.... I was just wondering if there was anyway around this?

I have (As have others) approached the owners of the house in question and they are not willing to reduce the size of them.

few year back when living at my mum and dads a few doors down had same problem but the trees was over the fence they cut em and had to offer the branches back to there next door neighbour or get rid of them.the only time the council did out was when the tree was growing under the roof and pushing under the gutter making the roof unsafe.i also know a guy who got fined for cutting down a tree because he lived in a aveune and with out trees both sides its not a aveune not sure what happened there has they was not his trees.get all your neighbours to complain at local council meeting.

We are having exactly the same problem with our neighbours' lleyllandi it's now grown so high that we are not getting any sunlight, there are four houses that are being overshadowed and I don't know how many others on the other side of his bungalow. I've tried ringing the Council about him but I can't get through. I wouldn't have thought you would have to pay for someone elses' nuisance. I'll post again if I get to know anythng.

Google 'High Hedges Legislation'.
The gist is that some councils offer a service to review the problem under the Statutory Nuisance legislation. If it is offered, you will have to pay upfront for the council to review it.

why shoulg the owners pay though? they are happy with them, it is you that has an issue...

Why shouldn't the owners pay? it's a nuisance, plus it's verging on dangerous... Other neighbours are having issues with the roots. If I were causing a nuisance and having a party into the early hours and someone complained, I would have to stop, and the complainant wouldn't have to pay the fine... I would!!

A dark night and a couple of buckets of strong weedkiller or similar might have the desired effect.! !
