It is clear the wrong allegation that the NotW had deleted messages had come from the Police.
I have never heard of phones automatically deleting messages. That seems to be counter to what the voicemail is for. I know someone who had a voicemail from her son who died, on her phone for several years.

Falsish....
some of the instructions to the Hackers were:
'and dont delete any emails'.....
which kinda implies that it was a choice and that the choice had been previously followed.
So altho Millie's emails may not have been deleted,
it looks as though others were
I dont think this fulfills the but-for test for causation
but for Millie Dowler, the News of the Screws would still be here .....

Murdoch has paid out £millions to victims of News of the World hacking, which seems to be an admission that the hacks took place.
So the verdict of not guilty for Brookes seems to imply that she was in charge as editor, and her journalists were getting these great stories and leads, but she never thought to ask them how they were finding out the information, what was their source? Somehow I find that hard to believe, but then I didn't hear the evidence in Court.

Its interesting that on the day after Coulson was convicted for his part in the NOTW phone hacking scandal, the messengers are now being attacked.

There is no doubt whatsoever that the actions of the NOTW led Milly's parents to have false hopes that their daughter was still alive, and in September 2011, it was reported that News International had offered 2 million pounds in damages to Mr/Mrs Dowler. I might take this opportunity to remind people that the NOTW also hacked into the Mobiles of the relatives of people killed in the 7/7 bombings, as well the relatives of British soldiers killed in action. Glenn Mulcaire, a private investigator, worked for the NOTW and was convicted in 2007, alongside NOTW royal editor Clive Goodman. The newspaper also hacked into numerous other people Mobiles, not in an attempt at "investigative journalism" but purely and simply to make money.
It is quite clear that had the Guardian, and other news media, like that well other known left-wing publication, the Telegraph, not started an investigation into the criminal activities at the NOTW, the paper would still be publishing and still carrying on as before. The job losses that occurred when the NOTW closed were unfortunate but they were entirely down to the management and Proprietor's extreme lack of control of the aforesaid criminal activity.
Rupert Murdoch closed down the NOTW, not the Guardian or any other newspaper.
Perhaps our thoughts today should be with all the innocent people dragged through the mud by the NOTW while it employed criminals like Mulcaire and Coulson, rather than shedding crocodile tears for a worthless scandal rag like the NOTW.
