Collecting Wood From Common Land

Am I allowed to collect kindling (not logs) from the common woodlands in my area, or is it illegal.

A lot of woodland that is open to the public is privately owned and all wood belongs to them.

Places that are commons are not necessarily common land in the sense of belonging freely to all. If there are scientific or environmental reasons then gathering kindling may not be allowed or may only be allowed at certain times of year, eg when hibernating animals aren't likely to be disturbed or in the spring when ground nesting birds need protecting.

Thanks all, very interesting, I knew you were not allowed to collect logs (from trees that had been felled), but thought thak kindling may be different, as you can collect pine cones, so why not twigs etc!

I guess its where do you draw the line?
