Hi, I work in a care home and all the staff have to renew their CRBs. Mine must be 5years old now, some of the staff are even longer. I have not worked anywhere else in that time. My question is do I have to pay for the CRB check? I am sure last time the company I worked for paid it. At the moment, I have heard that the owners are going to refuse to pay for the checks this time! which I think would be unfair as I am sure they get a discount for completing so many at a time. Anyone help. Thank you.

agree they do not have an expiry date, but is good practise to renew them. Our company do them every 3 years. New carers pay but when renewed the company pays. It is up to your company if they pay or not.
Thats was my thoughts, that the company should pay. But it turns out, that someone reported care home in a letter to the commission, about the standards of the home,and also included that the propriertors was only in in the field for the money, so this has got their back up, so they are saying because of the anon letter, that staff now will have to pay for CRB checks. My wife is a manager of a care home in East Sussex. She said they renew their staff CRB every 3 years and the company pays for it...unless the member of staff leaves within 3 months, then the charge is bourne by the employee

the employer can (and does is some cases) pass on the charge to the employee
I think you have your employer and employee mixed up - if the employee wants the job and they have to pay for their CRB then so be it. If they refuse the employer just moves onto the next person, simple.

Employers do not apply for CRB checks (the Data Protection Act does not allow for employers to request such information). They must ask for individuals to apply for a CRB which the employer is then allowed (with the applicants approval) a copy. The individual being checked is responsible for the cost, however an employer can offer to pay this fee on behalf of an applicant.
Eastender, as pink-kittens says, your employer can tell you you must pay for own check. Luckily where I work we dont
We are also just applying for ours to be done again and are doing them ourselves on line although during work hours
