is there any rule of law regarding members clubs ,such as do the committee have the right to go against the wishes of the members .no one seems to know how members stand, i thought one member one vote was enough to overturn something as long as you had a majority.

I imagine these points would be covered in the club rules or articles of association.
Agree with Howard. If a club has a formal constitution there will be provision for member to vote on matters at an AGM, or specially convened EGM. The rules will determine what percentage majority is required to carry a vote.
I agree with you both the voting rules will be in the constitution.
