USA - Places to see
I know it's a humongous place. Following on from my New York post I was wondering if anyone had experience of great places to visit also. We are going to New York June/July time and would like to travel around afterwards for a week or so - we were looking at multi-centres but haven't found one we like yet. Initially we were planning to to Boston then New York then Florida. Have decided to either visit Boston on a day/night trip or just leave it until the fall and go back. Florida - we don't drive and the theme parks just seem so expensive and big (I fear I will hate it). Where can we go that is reasonable to travel to via Amtrak or even air?. We don't mind a few hours travel if the place is going to take a few days to see and enjoy. This will be my first USA holiday and would love it to be fun and not necessarily too touristy (besides New York). Any suggestions I would be grateful and will look into as I want this holiday to be as good as we can make it. The destinations don't all have to be city based either. You guys are well travelled I am sure - suggest away, Thanks Guys

There's lots to see. But what sort of things do you like visiting? Malls? Theme parks? Historic sites? Beautiful countryside? Cities? Covered bridges? Autumn colours? etc...

IK've just spent a weekend with a friend who is working her way around the USA in 3 week chunks every year, she went to Washington state last year and this weekend I finally got to see the photos, it was amazing, they spent 3 weeks tourinmg Washington State and Oregon, the volcanos and lakes are stunning, they flew to Vancouver and all the immigration stuff is done in advance and then they hired a large tourer and just stopped at small motels, the photos were amazing and they had the best time, no worries and pleasant stays.
I went to Boston for a day trip from New York City by train. It was a lovely day out, had time to walk the Freedom trail and have a meal in Cheers. Depends how much else you want to see. Have a look at the Amtrak web site, you can get an idea of where you can go, and do some research on what you want to see. Washington DC is also easy to get to by train from NY. You can book your tickets online before you go too.
A few years ago I visited a friend in Lousiville, Kentucky. This is where the Kentucky Derby is held, so you can visit the racecourse. There is a paddle steamer on the Ohio river and on the Indiana side of the river there is a park with exposed fossil beds. There is also a baseball bat museum which has the worlds largest baseball bat outside it, a huge cavern, a zoo, the most amazing cemetery and this fantastic cafe http://www.lynnsparadisecafe.com/. And it is Mohammed Alis birthplace. I went in January and I think I was the only Brit there - my accent was certainly commented upon nearly everywhere!
But don't go to Florida without visiting at least one theme park. They are so well done. Believe you me, they are nothing like the British ones. They are so clean and well thought out. At Islands of Adventure as you walk into the Jurassic Park part the theme tune is playing and there are 'fossils' built into the walkway. And the Cat in the Hat bit has to be seen to be believed, you can even get green eggs and ham there!
