Working Tax Credits Or Not?

Odd one, Working 18 hours a week and get child tax credits. We get free school meals and not sure of other things we could get.
Got a chance to do another 8 hours with another company so would get working tax credits. 24 hours.
I know we will lose schools meals but will we be worse off? But we do get help from the council with rent and wonder if all the extra money would be taken by the state? and we might be worse off.. had a council man say to me years ago, every extra pound you make we take off you.
Is it worth it and will i be worse off maybe with meals etc??
