I have booked a flight with easyjet to travel to spain in june,giving my passport details,now I realise that the passport runs out less than 6 months after my journey so have to renew it before I travel,will I be able to change my passport number as i have already given details of my current one

who says you have to renew it, Easyjet? Passports are good up till the day they die.

If travelling within the EU (if you are an EU passport holder) ypur passport is valid til the expiration date.

Of course it's valid til the expiration date, duh, what I meant to say was iit doesn't have to have at least 6 months left on it when you return.

Spain will be fine. Other places including the USA require that a passport is valid 6 months after your return.

I phoned Easyjet & was toldI had to pohne the british embassy in spain as it differs with different countries or perhaps I should just renew it to be on the safe side.I also phoned the main government passport office & they said to renew it ,so now i don't know what to do,whats the point in having a runout date if you have to renew it before ,mine runs out on 15th sept,& i travel on 24th june

You can renew your passport at any time, you don't have to wait for it to expire. If you renew it within 9 months of the expiry date they will add any remaining time to your new passport. Eg you renew with 6 months left on your passport your new passport is valid for 10 years and 6 months.

EU law requires that all EU member states recognise and accept EU passports throughout the FULL period of their stated validity. (It's only countries where you can only stay for a limited time that sometimes have restrictions on passport validity. You're entitled to remain in any EU country for the rest of your life if you so please, so there can't be any restriction on your passport validity).

Some stupid travel agents can't be bothered to tell customers about the different rules that apply to people of differing nationalities or travelling to different countries. So they erroneously tell everyone that a 6-month rule applies everywhere.

There are only two places that you should trust for accurate information. The first is the website of the Embassy of the relevant country. The other is the website of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, which Methyl has linked to.

Easyjet staff are total idiots, they should know the passport validity requirements! It's valid right up to the expiry date, that includes travel to Spain and any other EU member country.

angie55, your passport only needs to be valid for the length of stay in the USA. Countries that require extra validity on passports are usually Third World or have a lot of catching up to do technology wise.

Just Jude-thanks for that. It must be a recent change as I know a couple of years ago I had to renew my passport before I went cos it was only valid for 3 months after I got back.

Last week I sent off my passport to be renewed on Monday, via the Post Office, and it was back with me on Wednesday.
