Travelling With An Expired Passport - 2Nd Update .......

Following on from my previous 2 threads, they returned home last week.

A quick reminder - his passport expired approx 8 months ago and after contacting Jet2, they were told that it would be okay to travel with an expired passport.

On the way to Spain, they got through immigration at both ends no problem .... it's as if no one notice ..... or mo one cared!!!!

On the way back, they got through immigration in Spain, but the passport was noticed in the UK. The immigration officer asked him if he knew that his passport was out of date and he told him that he already knew. The officer told him to wait whilst he had a word with his manager. He returned 5 minutes later and told him he was okay to continue, but he should renew his passport ASAP.

...... and there you have it ..... you can travel with an expired passport.
So what's the point in paying to renew it, if you can use an expired one?? I wonder at what point they'd refuse an expired passport .... a year out of date ..... five years out of date????

It could be that they've made a note against his passport so, if he tries it again, they'll put him through a whole lot of inconvenience before they let him back into the UK.

Maybe he was just lucky. Why would anyone chance it?

I went to majorca with an expired passport once (didn't intend to...) and nobody noticed.

Also no passports checked to or from France on the Channel tunnel. However, I wouldn't rely on it!

I don't think they could stop him, as he could prove his identity with it.

Like I said on one of the other threads my OH's passport was flagged up because it only had a few months left to run.

Yes ummmm think you should have at least 6 months on passport before you travel.

Interesting comment from Pixie at 12:32 - I've used Eurotunnel dozens of times and have never failed to have my passport checked by UK customs in both directions. The French are not as diligent with their checks.

TonyV - I googled countries we could go to with less than 6 months. Spain was one of them but it said the passport had to still be valid on our return.

Bhg, there had been some problems with immigrants trying to come up the tunnel at the time and it was all fairly chaotic. Nobody was in any of the passport points, so the whole train load just left.

at the moment you can travel to and from EU countries as long as your passport is currently valid, though some tour operators claim you should have 6 months to run.

I wouldn't swear it will be the same after Brexit, though.

Pixie - every time we use the Channel Tunnel (3 or 4 times a year) our passports are checked out and checked in (and actually scanned) - I'm talking about the Shuttle with the car, so maybe Eurostar is different.

I went to France with a recently expired passport, I hadn't noticed. Noone checked on the way out but the chap at the gate in Calais on our return pointed it out to me. He seemed to think it was funny. I suppose I'm an illegal immigrant!

Many years ago admittedly, but my Dad realised his had expired just before a trip to Amsterdam. When he enquired he was told no problem, as he was travelling inside the EU.
He traveled, no problems.
