Thug on suspended sentence re-offends. Magistrate doesn't invoke sentence, just gives him another suspended sentence. I despair.

And no doubt the thug will assault his ex-girlfriend yet again - doesn't the stupid magistrate realise she deserves protection ?

The magistrate heard all the evidence. You've read a report in the Swindon Advertiser. So that puts you in a better position to decide an appropriate sentence.

I don't seem to recall deciding a sentence, I was just commenting on a newspaper report - if you are going to proscribe such commentary then Answerbank will become a lot thinner.

Yes, ol is quite correct. This gentleman was charged with ABH which is an "either way" offence. The decsion where to try or sentence the defendant in such matters rests initially with Magistrates and it seems likely that it was they who determined that the matter was too serious for them to handle. So the stupid Magistrates almost certainly sent the matter to the Crown Court expecting the sensible Recorder to hand down a stiff sentence. So let's give credit where it's due.
