at least these innocent men are now free,

> In 1989, the five men -- all of whom were between 14 to 16 years
of age at the time of their convictions - <

> On May 1, 1989, while the case was in the media spotlight,
Trump took out full-page advertisements in four New York
newspapers calling for the return of the death penalty <

A baldy *** that says nothing of interest. He still thinks that Obama isn't an American, so whatever else he says should be treated with extreme caution.
it's not really clear what he's saying - it appears to be that it should have been settled earlier (which would perhaps have meant "settled for less money").

"The justice system has a lot to answer for, as does the City of New York regarding this very mishandled disaster. Information was being leaked to newspapers by someone on the case from the beginning, and the blunders were frequent and obvious."

Well, NYC wouldn't be the only place where controversial cases have been bungled and leaked everywhere.

>Settling doesn’t mean innocence, but it indicates incompetence on several levels. <

dna and a confession still does not mean innocence what does he want
what does he want? Well, that's what I was wondering.

To answer your original question, no. Reading about Gerry Conlon reminds me he'd have been long dead if they'd had the death penalty here too.
And that is why I will never support the death penalty here in Britain.

Do we all remember Timothy Evans ?

jno that is why i am against it there have been plenty of innocent people banged up inside
me too, DrF and mikey. Until the police and prosecutors are as white as snow and judges and juries all have their heads screwed on, the death penalty will never be safe.
Here here jon !
jno even !

worst case for me was this one

Stefan Ivan Kiszko

the judge >He also praised the police officers involved in the case
"for their great skill in bringing to justice the person
responsible for this dreadful crime and their expertise
in sifting through masses of material", adding, "I would
like all the officers responsible for the result to be specially
commended and these observations conveyed to the Chief
Constable". DS John Akeroyd and DSupt Holland were singled
out for praise. <

he had male hypogonadism, which rendered him infertile, contradicting
forensic evidence obtained at the time of the murder. In 1975 his testes
had measured 4 to 5 mm, whereas the average male testicular size was
15 to 20 mm. During his research, Jackson found someone who confirmed
that Kiszko had been seen with his aunt tending his father's grave on the
day the murder took place. They said they could not understand why they
had not been called to give evidence at the trial. Someone else said that
Kiszko had been in a shop around the time of the murder.

Also in February 1991, the four girls involved in the court trial admitted that
the evidence they had given which had led to Kiszko's arrest and conviction
was false, and that they had lied for "a laugh" and because "at the time it was funny".
The Stefan Kiszko case was the saddest ever. And as for Donald trump - anyone who sports a hairdo like that obviously doesn't have a sensible thought in his head!
Dreadful DrF. But if any regime attempted to bring the death penalty
back, at any time in the future, there would a large minority would support it, which is sad but probably true.

By the way, an interesting debate going on in News this morning, about other appalling miscarriages of justice.

i am on it thanks
Sorry...you are indeed DrF...missed you !
Dr Filth - In one of the cases - Run Bambi Run - I think, a commentator was going thro the Hang-em-high countries and didnt mention the UK. When challenged, said 'oh its well known there is no appetite for capital punishment in the UK as a result of miscarriages of justice over fifty years.'

Kisko - he had azoospermia - known at the time and so should neva have been convicted and the Defence afterwards kept VERY quiet about their failure in that one. Actually the defence QC became Home Secretary - was it Buchanan ? - and realised the significance once it had been pointed out to him ( hem hem ) and arranged for bail whilst the appeal was heard.

Kisko's original defence had been manslaughter by diminished responsibility....

Once they knew he hadnt done it - the four girls testimony had to be demolished and the only way out was for the girls all to admit perjury.
And they got them to do it. - the quote form one was - do you think I feel proud for what I have done ?

wow.

Kisko's comment was - I always believed in British Justice....
even more wow !
.

The girls' evidence was nothing to do with the murder but that he had jacked himself off in public ( in his car)......

In the Lesley Moleseed murder much was made of the lorry driver's blood group (A) being found at the scene. ( 42% of anglos) and no one asked what Lesley's blood group was (A) until twenty y later.... oops
what was the Defence doing there ? again....
