Would some kind soul please explain in simple language what the changes to driving licences mean? "Paper counterpart licences will become obsolete". What is a counterpart licence? I don't have a photocard licence, just an old green paper one which I've had since the 70s. Do I need to do anything?
If you have a pink photocard licence you will have a white/green counterpart piece of paper to go with it.This shows endorsements etc. This counterpart is obsolete as from 8th June I think.
You keep your old green licence until any changed have to be made etc then you get a photocard.

Paper driving licence
Paper driving licences issued before the photocard was introduced in 1998 will remain valid and should not be destroyed.
If you need to update your name, address or renew your licence, you will be issued with a photocard only.
Presumably if you need to hire a car you will have to access your record online at the carhire desk and show them that you have no endorsements which could be the source of caffuffle
I was discussing this car hire business with an ex colleague of mine only yesterday. He travels and resides in mainland Spain often. The Hire company charged him £15 excess for the phone call to the UK to verify his endorsement record.Under normal circumstances, the old way, when a counterpart should of been produced it was NEVER,in my experience, asked for. Now these Hire firms have carte blanche to extort a nice little earner on the side thanks to the DVLA.
Exactly. As I pointed out in my first post. Another opportunity to rip off.The site is up and running now though but his counterpart is still valid until then.
I would of told the company to shove it.It is not as though there isn't the competition in Spain for car hire.
