If a transgender person (male to female or female to male) were to receive a custodial sentence would they be sent to a prison appropiate to their birth sex or a prison appropiate to their changed sex (male or female prison)?
Thanks.

i think ot may depend on whether they have a GRC or not
Question Author
whats a GRC
gender recognition certificate.
it depends on how far on they are in terms of hormone development and psyochologically.....
Question Author
Thanks bednobs, never heard of such a thing.
Question Author
DTC //it depends on how far on they are in terms of hormone development //
Back in the 90's I was serving a sentence in Walton prison and there was a guy (?) in there who was undergoing hormone treatment to become a female at the time he he got sent down. (the reception screws got their mates...other screws... to come and have a laugh at the freak that they had in reception).
Didnt know how it stood now with transgender people and custody, especially those that had fully changed.
Question Author
just reread my last post, didnt mean to imply that I thought the guy in question was "a freak"....that was what the screws called him.
I hope things have moved on since then...
I think for anyone to go for transgender are one of the bravest people I know - to go through what they go through - I'd rather hold on to my nether regions no matter what sex I felt.

It is funny an ordinary woman can wear trousers and shirt - that's ok
A man who would wear a ladies dress and high heels - well he wouldn't get away with it - would he.
Question Author
Very much doubt it ummm from what ive heard. Prison officers still have to be all "macho",(ex army types and all that).
Ironically, for a male dominated enviroment, the guy in question actually had a lot of respect off other cons (if not prison officers).
can they really send a person born 'male' but now having female genitalia and breasts to a men's prison?
Question Author
JJ, 100% agree. It takes some balls to want to lose them....
Question Author
Retro, thats exactly my question.
The guy that ive mentioned in this thread had breasts but hadnt yet had 'the chop'. He had a single cell on the hospital wing but no one wanted to, err, mess with him anyway.
I hate to contradict but the Prison Service hasnt been "ex army types" for many years now. For longer than 25 years the criteria for recruitment has stressed communication skills. Lets put the Mr McKay image to bed along with the title screws and respect the work that Prison Officers do with people most would not want to come anywhere near. The job has been independently rated twice as the most stressful.
I know 2 prison officers, one male (yes ex army but very 'soft' ) and the other female, private education and now an officer in one of the best (worse) women's prisons in the Uk and loving it.
nailit - you probably know they don't get the "chop" - they get tucked in to create a vagina - how bloody painful for them.
Question Author
//For longer than 25 years the criteria for recruitment has stressed communication skills.//
not in my experience it hasnt.
//people most would not want to come anywhere near.//
Another misconception, contary to popular belief prisons are NOT full of serial killers. Most people Ive known in prison have had addiction/mental health issues.
//I hate to contradict// Then don't unless you've been there.
Question Author
I know JJ, It was a euphamism ;-)
actually, jenny, the testicles are removed, the vagina is shaped from the penile skin, the spongiform being used as padding, the clitoris out of the penile head, the labia from the remaining skin, the trick being wiring nerve ends into the vestibule, along with the urethra. There are plenty of videos of the op on You Tube etc, the big issue for any trans being the depth achieved as the gap and space available in a male pelvis is far smaller than the female counterpart. I won't go into the risks of a fistula.

DTC, You've just put me off my supper....
