Why would you be called up for Jury Service earlier than original date you were given

Possibly becasue a case ended earlier than expected - but I would not be expected to be obliged to change if not convenient.

these things arent well run - chaotic even.I was declared fit to serve by a judge in London ( paper exercise) and the first thing the clerk of the court said on seeing me was
christ do you think you can do this
answer - a high court judge has deffo said yes !

I would suspect that they have had too many cry-off for the earlier time period (for which you have been asked to attend) and need additional jurors.

I was called for jury service soon after my 18th birthday – unless Peter Pedant happened to attend the same court, I can attest to the fact that the persons running the juror process at the court were the most incompetent I have ever encountered in my working life.

is it a problem? If you can go without messing up your plans, do and get it over with. If the change is at very short notice or otherwise inconvenient, see if they'll change it.

Back in 1984 I was called for jury duty at Newcastle Crown Court. We had moved to Northern Ireland the month before. I rang up the court and grudgingly, they let me off. :0)

No, I have done it. You do not go unless you are actually called to attend court. If / When you are called to court there will be more people on the 'panel' than are needed. The defense lawyer will select those he / she wants from the panel . If you are not selected you may be required for another case or you may be dismissed. I had to go to the court but the solicitor did not select me and I was dismissed. I got paid my travel expenses for attending court and the cost of a meal.

70 in Scotland according to their on line form on applying for exemption.

That's interesting ubasses. I found this and I read it as there is no upper age limit?? Just that you must be 18 years old. I haven't read all of it.

No ,you just need to be ready on the agreed date and for (I think) 5 court days after. I was called for jury service, went to court, but was not chosen. Normally you have to attend court for 3 days running if there are several trials due. But I told I would not be needed after the first day.

Er if you have been given a date to turn up - turn up then

I cant imagine you have asked why you could be called earlier than expected for a reason other than it has occurred

take a book and no ( or yes!) we were kept in a room 9-4 pm on each working day with a few minutes for lunch which you were let out and bought and ate yourself.
and yes there was a spat over hot water
and the bogs werent clean

we were the jury and not the defendants by the way

Maybe they had trouble filling the numbers with those called up having been excused.
You could phone and check they would probably be reasonable if you had a good reason for wanting to keep to your original dates.
I really enjoyed jury service and would love to do it again
