I take it the piece of garden you want comes up to your window which will eventually become a patio door? If so you could first of all put a few pieces of hedging around the piece of ground you want to become yours. A few pots as well and see if anybody says anything. Then if nobody does, slowly progress from there. Don't spend money on patio doors until you are...

I doubt it but you could always contact the council. As your LL they are the ones who will be able to say yay or nay.

Do you mean you want help asking the council about it? If so, the first step would be to contact the housing department.

@master.......I have called the housing department and they couldn’t help me. Thought we see if anyone had done this already.

If they can’t / won’t help, then you’re snookered. They are the only one who will allow the works.

I would imagine that other residents sharing the garden my not want to lose their communal privilege.

what did they actually say? If they are your landlord, then you need their permission...if they are saying they can't help you then did they mean "no"?

But there is a tenant who has already done it. I am not sure if they own the property or not but irrelevant as communal area.

Did you tell the housing deaprtment that someone else had already done this?

Have you spoken to this tenant with the private garden to see how they went about it?

@mark...... the communal area is locked, so no one uses it apart from when they cut the grass and as already mentioned, a tenant has already made a rear garden and fenced it off.

Even in totally privately owned homes, communal gardens are meant to remain just that. I think your neighbour might be breaking some rule and you would be if you did the same.

Hmmm, this is strange. A communal area is locked so the tenants who are entitled to can’t use it. Unfair to you all.
How did your neighbour get into it to fence a bit off?

Clover jo. It is private it’s council. The communal area isn’t used or able to be accessed by any of the tenants as it gated and padlocked.
