Just a wee reminder for anyone who may still have paper bank notes.

News release
The Bank of England will be withdrawing legal tender status of paper £20 and £50 banknotes after 30 September 2022.

After this date, paper £20 and £50 banknotes will no longer be legal tender. So we are encouraging anyone who still has these to use them or deposit them at their bank or a Post Office during these last 100 days.

It is also exactly one year since we issued the polymer £50 banknote featuring the scientist Alan Turing, on what would have been his 109th birthday. The Turing £50 completed our family of polymer notes, with all denominations (£5, £10, £20 and £50) now printed on polymer.

The other week in the back of a drawer with a lot of mementoes I found a paper bank note for ten shillings!!

Must admit I usually use my card. However, if feeling frugal I use cash. Seem to be able to keep a better track on my spending with cash.

Maggiebee, that’s why I was extolling the virtues of cash - as fatticusinch says. I believe we were talking about trying to budget. Cards are very easy to use. With cash in your purse you can’t spend more than you have.

More fumbling ahead. I find that the new polymer notes are quite tricky to handle, tending to slip out when trying to extract one from a bunch.

I've sent off all my stamps and am awaiting barcodes by return of post, if there are any posties still working.

As for paper notes, they'll be collectors' items if held for long enough, especially if in good condition. But your children or grandchidlren may be the ones to cash in.

Anyone who's not happy with their paper or polymer banknotes can send them to me. I'm not fussy about what the notes are made of.
