Notice Period

I am covering maternity leave at the company I work for and when I started the job I was issued with a temporary contract to remain in employment until June but it states 'dates to be finalised'. No notice period is specified in this contract but as I assume this is a temporary contract I need to give a minimum of 1 weeks notice?
My partner works in London and we have been asked to re-locate. I am in the process of looking for another job and as soon as an offer is confirmed I will hand in my notice. Is one week acceptable if I need to start another job asap? This is playing on my mind and I feel really guilty as it will be leaving them in the lurch! However I am not happy where I work and my employers are quite ruthless!

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.If there is nothing in your contract, and as this is a temporary position, you could effectively just leave without notice. However, if you are relying on them for a reference, I would give a minimum of one week notice up to as much as you can, although this is still no guarantee that they will give you a reference.
If you don't need a reference from them, I would just walk out when you are ready. As you said, they are a ruthless company so would probably do the same to you if they wanted to get rid of you.
